I.R. Compressor Connecting Rod Nuts

MJT on compressor crosshead jamnut

Problem: Installation and removal of connecting rod nuts on this compressor were difficult because of the high torque requirements and the limited access for tools. Traditional methods of snipes and hammer wrenching proved inaccurate, time consuming and unsafe.

Solution: Original nuts were replaced with Superbolt® "MT" style torquenuts allowing mechanics to install both top & bottom nuts by hand. Equivalent to 2,200 ft•lb of hex nut torque was easily achieved on these 1-1/2" x 12 tpi bolts using a 3/8" torque wrench set at only 49 ft•lb. An accurate preload was achieved quickly with no damage to the threads and no chance of workers being injured.
