Leveltek Leveler

5000 ton forging press picture

Leveltek began receiving end user demand for a more powerful leveler. This resulted in a larger machine design that required an extremely high preload to bolt the frame together. Each 4” diameter stud would require 750,000 lb preload, and standard hex nuts would require approximately 44,000 ft-lb torque to achieve the given preload. Superbolt® provided the bolting solution and manufactured multi-jackbolt tensioners, flexnuts, and studs. These components hold the entire frame together.

The studs are slightly less than 10’ long. The flex nuts add elasticity to the joint and reduce stress concentrations in the first few threads of engagement (which increases stud life). Superbolt® also provided 1.500”-6 tpi x 45” standard bolts and 4” diameter guide pins used to aid assembly.

Two workers installed the Superbolt® tensioners in just one hour. They were able to work safely with 1/2” drive air impacts and 1/2” drive hand torque wrenches. Only 120 ft-lb jackbolt torque was required to achieve the 750,000 lb preload.
